Besty Westy was started by Lee + Rachel Cumberland after traveling around New England in their 1986 VW Vanagon. Before getting into "van life," Lee + Rachel lived and traveled on their sailboat, a Tayana 37. To them, living within their means of transportation while traveling has made for the absolute best adventures. When you have your home and most important belongings right there with you, the world is truly your oyster. Besty Westy was started with the mission to give others the opportunity and tools to make their adventures memorable ones. When renting one of Besty Westy's fully outfitted VW vans, adventure awaits. You'll just need to provision with food and drinks of choice before you hit the road in our vintage vehicles, looking good while you're at it!

Lee is the definition of a Renaissance Man. There is no hobby he hasn't dabbled in, and succeeded at as well. You'll find him working on the VW vans, cycling, sailing, flying (yes, he's a pilot as well), hunting, etc. Lee's motto in life is "A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyze a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently, die gallantly. Specialization is for insects.”

When Rachel met Lee she was a city girl living in NYC and working in the music industry. Her childhood background of teaching sailing at a summer camp on the Eastern Shore of MD and her love for camping called her towards Lee and his love for outdoor adventuring. You'll now find Rachel setting up camp as soon as the van is parked, while wearing an aztec sweater, beanie, and enjoying a good West Coast IPA. Rachel also owns her own Wedding + Event planning company and will be your main contact at Besty Westy for logistics and suggestions on your travel.

Hazel, commonly called Hazel Basil, is Besty Westy's mascot and biggest fan. Hazel is always down for a hike in the woods, especially when deer can be seen. Although Hazel isn't able to drive the VW Vanagons, she has mastered relaxing in the backseat during the many drives through the country roads.
